If you are looking for a tuner in the $1,000 range, check out the Yamaha RX-V200. You can get it on Amazon.com, as well as most any large retail outlet. If you are a little on the smaller side, or don't want an external box to deal with, you can get a 4-channel pre-amplifier that plugs into your computer as well as the tuner, the Yamaha RX-V200SE. Also on Amazon, and a few other retailers.
That about sums up the basics of getting into automotive audio. Happy listening!

Thanks for the inputs. The K-Case in my posts was referring to a built in tuner in the factory CD player. I also have a compact disc player with CD/SACD inputs and a DVD player with optical digital and SACD inputs.
The general idea is to get a high quality source (CD, SACD) and then up the gain so you don't overdrive your amp/speakers. I use a 3 knob thingie called a "volume potentiometer" to control the volume level. Not sure if that's the best way to go, but I've had good results with that method. I just keep the knob at a medium/low setting until I hear what I want to hear.
You can use your computer to load/unload presets or even change the CD/SACD source. We did a little of that on our system. My first CD player was a 4 channel Philips unit with a built in subwoofer. It was all factory installed into a 1986 Acura Integra. When that player died, I bought a new unit. It had built in DVD, CD, SACD, and FM radio. It also had a small remote control on the front of the unit. We loaded/unloaded presets with the remote control. It worked OK, but a little "flickery". The DVD and CD source was excellent, so I threw out the FM radio, DVD, and CD inputs. The SACD and FM radio inputs were bypassed so there was no loss in sound quality. You'd turn the volume of the SACD up really high and then you would turn the volume of your amp/speakers up high. It was great until the SACD built in sub woofer died. We ended up using a small 2 way sub with our speakers. We also were
